Everyone knows that yoga is good for both mind and body, but did you know it can be especially beneficial for seniors and older adults? Even seniors with physical disabilities and low mobility can enjoy and benefit from yoga, which is a highly adaptable, low impact exercise. A Place for Mom has created an animated infographic with some of the best poses seniors can do to relieve pain, improve their health and have fun!
Unfortunately, living with pain and other health conditions is a part of daily life for older adults. From stiff, achy joints to serious diseases, the body can begin to show signs of wear and tear with age. However, research has found that yoga can have a significant impact on many areas of health, both physical and mental.
Specifically, yoga offers these benefits for seniors:
- Better joint health and mobility
- Lower blood pressure
- Strong lungs
- Improved mental health
- Reduced stress
- Better sleep
Before starting yoga, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first. A supportive mat, loose clothing and open space are key to safe yoga. Additionally, you should never push your body past its limit. Never force your body into a pose that feels uncomfortable or causes pain and if needed, ask a certified yoga instructor for help!
