Alzheimer’s: Events That Give Back

Alzheimer’s is currently a disease without a cure, but many people worldwide are working to change that. Nonprofit organizations (like the Alzheimer’s Association) are constantly fundraising for research to develop new treatments. Each advancement takes us one step closer to a world without Alzheimer’s.

Nonprofit organizations that benefit Alzheimer’s research are also focused on the prevention of the disease, as well as the enhancement of care for all those affected. Support and funding for nonprofits comes from the community, and joining the fight to end this disease has never been easier. There are several ways to get involved and give back, at both an individual and at a community level.

  1. Participate in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s. These walks are held in more than 600 communities nationwide each year. It’s the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Grab some friends and family and hit the pavement! You can find a location to participate in a city near you here WALK TO END ALZ

  2. Join The Longest Day. On June 21, the Summer Solstice, you can pick an activity to participate in and fundraise for, or create/join an event near you. Anyone anywhere can be a part of The Longest Day. Games, exercise, and hobbies are all activities you can perform to connect with thousands of people against this disease. Last year, people participated in activities ranging from bridge to cookouts. Throwing a party or attending a gala could be a fun way to get involved and encourage others to join your efforts. You can learn more and sign up here THE LONGEST DAY

  3. Create your own event to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease by using Eventbrite. They offer discounts for nonprofit fundraising, and their platform makes it easy to plan, manage and grow your event. This is a great option if you have an idea you’d love to execute but don’t have the resources to do so. You can learn more about setting up your own fundraiser here EVENTBRITE

Donate. When time is of the essence, money will do, and giving online is a simple process (that you can write off on your taxes!). The money you give can help fund even more research and help with the care, support, and prevention of this disease. Learn more here ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION

  4. Become an advocate. Spread the news about upcoming events. Educate others. Get in touch with your local legislators and let them know that finding a cure for Alzheimer’s is important to you. Speaking out can make a difference and encourage others to get involved. Taking advantage of your social platforms to share your voice can make an impact in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

  5. Visit someone you know (or someone you don’t) with Alzheimer’s. Company can help ease the pain of a debilitating disease. You could also help relieve a caregiver of their duties, even if it’s only for a short time. Caregivers give so much of themselves and can provide better care when they’re fresh and feel good themselves. This option is great if you’re not comfortable fundraising and don’t have money to donate yourself. Time and care can be a great way to give back.

Have you advocated for the prevention and cure of this disease before? What events have you participated in? Are there events you’d love to create or be a part of? Share in the comments below!
