Health On The Road: How To Stay Fit While On The Go

When you think about traveling, you may think about dreamy nights under a starry sky, early morning coffee by a campfire, or luxurious hotel lounges. Although traveling provides many amazing memories and new experiences, there are some aspects of traveling that are difficult to get accustomed to. Many people are curious as to how they can maintain their physical health and fitness while on the go.  Although your regimen may not include boutique gyms and personal trainers, there are many ways that you can maintain and enhance your fitness while traveling. In this article, we will discuss the important aspects of a fitness routine and ideas on how to optimize health when traveling.

Important Aspects of Your Fitness Regimen

Maintaining your physical health while on the road is extremely important. When you are traveling, you want to feel your best and maximize your time. Diet and exercise play an important role in overall well-being, both physical and mental. Many times, you must prioritize nutrition in order to prioritize exercise. When you are not eating foods that supply energy to your body, it is difficult to sustain an active lifestyle.

Although it can be difficult to prioritize exercise and nutrition while you are on the go, it is something that should be done to increase your energy and quality of life.

Today, we are going to focus on the role fitness plays in your overall health. The following sections outline the important aspects of a fitness regimen.

Sustainability

In order to reap the benefits of working out, you must develop consistency. To develop consistency, you must find a workout regimen that you enjoy. When you don’t enjoy the exercise you are partaking in, you are less likely to prioritize it on a regular basis. By finding a workout that is right for you, you can begin developing a habit that is sustainable no matter where you are.  Once you build a habit, it will be easier to sustain. There will be times that you have to make sacrifices in order to exercise. It is important to find a balance that suits your lifestyle.

Length of Workout

Another component of consistency is the length of time. In addition to finding a workout you enjoy doing, it is important to find a routine that is short and effective. Let’s be honest, most days you do not have hours on end to dedicate to exercise. Find an effective exercise regimen that can be completed in a brief time frame. When you have an efficient routine, there are no excuses for skipping workouts!

Accessibility is Limited

When you are on the go, you will not always have access to gym equipment and fitness accessories. To maintain your health, you must develop a workout routine that can be completed no matter where you are. Whether you are in a hotel in London or a national park in Utah, you can get an intense workout. You will most commonly be exercising using your bodyweight and the products that you are traveling with.

Switch It Up

Use exercise as a way to be immersed in the destination you are traveling to. You can explore the city by walking, jogging, or biking around. Visit local fitness studios and meet locals. Switching up your exercise routines breaks up the monotony of working out. When you partake in different forms of exercise, you get to work a variety of different muscles in your body.

How to Stay Fit on the Road

Now that you know how to build a workout regimen that fits your lifestyle, there are many ways that you can diversify your exercise routine. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach for wellness on the road, you have to find what is right for you. Whether you are a strength training guru or a nature lover, you can find a workout you enjoy. In this section, we will discuss different forms of exercises that can be completed no matter where you are.

Bodyweight Strength Workouts

You can enhance your strength while you are on the road. If you are moving quickly, you only need 20 minutes to boost your metabolism and strengthen your muscles. There are many bodyweight exercise routines on Youtube and other media channels. Athlean X has vigorous workouts that can be completed in just 10 to 15 minutes. Some of the common bodyweight exercises that effectively strengthen muscles include:

  • Push-ups
  • Squats (grab laundry detergent or a stack of books if you want to add weight)
  • Planks
  • Walking Lunges

These movements engage muscles throughout your entire body.

Use your Environment for Strength Training

When traveling, you can get creative with the “equipment” that you use. Holding your luggage by its handles, you can strengthen using the following movements:

    • Single Arm Luggage Rows
    • Front Squat with Luggage
    • Single Arm Curl with Luggage

Other creative ways to leverage include

    • Face Pulls with Backpack (see Athlean X) Youtube Videos
    • Bulgarian Split Squats with Front Foot Elevated on Chair
    • Forward Lunges with Paper Plates

Use your time on the road to be innovative with your exercise props!

High-Intensity Bodyweight Workouts

Not only can you use bodyweight movements to enhance strength, but you can also torch calories and build aerobic endurance. Integrate strength training exercises with plyometric movements. Some explosive bodyweight movements include:

  • Burpees
  • Jump Squats
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Commandos
  • V-Ups

These movements are fast-paced and exhausting! By integrating conditioning workouts into your routine, you will likely see results quickly.

Running and Walking

Both running and walking are great practices for cardiovascular endurance. When you go for a run, you explore the city you are visiting while elevating your heart rate and releasing endorphins. Walking helps to balance the circulation in your body while supporting your joints. Both jogging and walking help you to burn calories and strengthen muscles.

Swimming and Hiking

Depending on where you are, you can use your surroundings to plan a unique workout. If there are rigorous hike around, you can stretch your legs and strengthen your glutes as you explore nature’s beauty. If there is a lake or ocean nearby, release the tension in your body by going for a swim. These activities are optimal for individuals who want to get to know the destination they are visiting in an intimate way.

Summary

Although staying fit on the road is difficult, it is worth it. By developing a short and sustainable workout regimen, you can create consistency in your routine. There are many ways you can switch up your training schedule in order to keep your workouts exciting. If you are in a town that is experiencing pleasant weather, consider taking a stroll around the city. If you are crunched for time, complete a rigorous bodyweight workout. Working out is a habit that is maintainable whether you are in your home or on the road.
