VIOLET IODINE BECAUSE…

The day my period came I literally thought I was dying. Luckily mom & I were home alone that day. My screams rivaled those of a Freddie Krueger victim. Mom of course, came running to see what was wrong with me.When she saw why I was screaming bloody murder she went into her bedroom and came back with a pad. I took the pad and put it on. It went from my belly button all the way to my training bra strap. She shook her head and said, “you will need these once a month for about a week. I’ll buy you some that fit better. It’s not something we talk about.” and that was it.
I always felt like she was ashamed of me or that I had done something wrong. It wasn’t until I read Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s me Margaret” that I began to understand what life had in store for me just because I had been born a female.
